Described by The Guardian as ”a composer who knows exactly what he wants and how to achieve it,” Francesco Antonioni's music is defined by emotional transparency and structural depth. Operating beyond stylistic dogmas, his work spans orchestral, chamber, vocal, and electronic genres, seamlessly fusing symphonic tradition with contemporary rhythmic vitality.
Francesco has received commissions from prestigious institutions such as Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, Ensemble Modern, Birmingham Contemporary Music Group, and the Albany Symphony Orchestra. His music has been championed by leading conductors and soloists, including Antonio Pappano, George Benjamin, Vladimir Ashkenazy, David Alan Miller, Daniele Rustioni, Roland Böer, Sian Edwards, Evelyn Glennie, Yuri Bashmet, and Beatrice Rana.
Encompassing large-scale concert works, theatrical productions, andimmersive sound installations and collaborations with prominent choreographers, Francesco maintains an uncompromising artistic freedom, without allegiance to any particular orthodoxy. Recent highlights include commissions from Wigmore Hall and Bielefeld Opera, and a new choreography set to his music at the Bayerische Staatsoper (Munich).
Beyond the concert hall, he is an influential voice in contemporary musical culture as a professor at the Florence Conservatory and the Accademia di Musica di Pinerolo, and as an authoritative broadcaster for Rai Radio 3 and Rai 5.
His scores are published by Casa Ricordi.
